Haven't seen the movie, I tend to agree with you that she is as far from Miranda Priestley as one can go.

I just cannot picture her in a cruel, devilish, manipulative yet ingenious fashion icon role. She is much too humane for that. Besides, with her silver hair and oversized sunglasses, she sure looks more comical than stylish. The book itself received quite some negative reviews from prominent literary reviewers, some of which almost border on personal attack of the author. I can only guess this movie is make-peace gesture of Hollywood with Anna Wintour and her followers by embellishing and sympathizing with the role.
