Celebration of an urban legend---Jane Jacobs

饭后去散步, 路过Trinity St. Paul's Church时, 耳边飘过一段优雅的音乐, 进去一看, 四个年轻女子正在演奏莫扎特的双簧观与弦乐四重奏. 大幅投影屏幕上显示着一个老太太慈祥而又充满智慧的头象, 原来是Annex的居民们正在为前不久刚去世的Jane Jacobs举行一个纪念会.

Jane Jacobs是我最敬佩的居住在加拿大的学者, 她在六十年代写的<Death and Life of Great American Cities>一出版就立刻成为城市社会学, 城市经济学及城市政治学的经典. 她不光是一个学者, 还是一个社会活动家. 作为Annex的一个居民, 她不断地为了保护多元文化的社区而组织居民反对市政府的政客们搞的那些好大喜功的所谓"城市规划". 多伦多能成为北美最适合居住的大城市Jane Jacobs功不可没.
