I am looking for some good books to read. Please feel free to recommend: what is it about, why do you like it. English books only please. In exchange, here are some books I read this year.

本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛A Short History of Nearly Everything: a science history book, explains in layman' s term a wide range fo topics, from the origin of the universe to the inner works of DNA. Extremely witty and humorous prose, answered a lot of questions I always had.

First Impressions: how to interact with people in the first time meeting, and leave a positive impression. Comments on the social context are quite helpful, especially for people from other cultural background. I find it much better than those Dale Carneigie "how to make friends" books.

Freakanomics: A wiz economist's observation on social phenomena, and his explanations. A lot of new angles to look at things.

The Tipping Point: This book is already influencing the way companies market their products. But I feel the author is guilty of dumbing it down someimes for the readers, by ignoring other driving forces that are causing the changes.

The West Wing: This is actually not a book. It's the twice Emmy winning political drama. I borrowed the complete first season and second season from the library. (44 episodes). mssd, it's a master piece. I can read the script like a Shakespear's play.更多精彩文章及讨论,请光临枫下论坛 rolia.net

    • C'mon, nobody reads? On a snowy day? in front of the fireplace?
      • 推荐Maynard Solomon的《贝多芬传》,你感兴趣吗? 还有索仁尼琴的《古拉格群岛》(The Gulag Archipelago)
        • Thanks.
Found "Beethoven" in the library catalogue. Will check it out. I happen to like classic music as well, so I can play some Beethoven CDs during the reading. There was a Beethoven movie years ago, which is not as famous as the one for Mozart, but still very good. "The Gulag Archipelago" is a huge book, I have seen the Chinese version more than a decade ago, did you finish reading it?
          • There's an authentic abridged version which was acknowledged by the author himself. You might want to check that one out. It's one volume paperback.
            • Got it. What's up with your ID buddy? watch mine: been through "high" and "low" but "still mellow". Cheers.
