听乐杂文系列之 Final Concert of the 2005 Season — TSO

Final Concert of the 2005 Season:

It was the first time ever I heard the New Vienese School music, one of Berg's earliest works, Piano Sonata Op.1, only this time transcribed for orchestra. I dunno how to describe precisely how this music felt, but it was not so much twelve-tone as I had expected. I guess Berg composed it before he morphed into his later style. It was something like late Romantic, pretty Mahlerian in texture and harmony, and reminded me of Schoneberg's Gurrelieder, powerful and rousing like a whirlwind, in part owing to Verney's ferocious orchestration.

The next item was Schubert's not-so-well-known Konzertstucke for violin and orchestra, and was supposed to be a delight. True, Josefowicz played with grace and lyricism. However there was something missing and that was character. There seemed to be a lack of character in her playing that hindered her from projecting the sound to its fullest. The solo violin was at times drowned out by the orchestral strings to such an extent that you could barely distinguish it from the orchestra. Ms.Josefowicz lacked the kind of keenness or sharp attack to make her sound really stand out and shine, nor did her playing possess dramatic power to create a sense of immediacy and spontaneity. The playing was suffused with refinement and lilting lyricism that were congenial to the Classical period, but she achieved these at the expense of drama. The result left me with an impression that I was just having an after-dinner dessert; the sweet taste was all there was to it. The Kreisler showpieces did not prove to be encouraging enough either; it seemed her characterless way persisted even into these High Romantic "perfume" music. Liebesleid and Liebesfreud were good; the rest were average. Again, I say all this with the preamble that I basically do not like orchestral accompaniment. Who am I to judge here anyway!~~~ ha

w00t~ It all came down to the last great work of the last concert of this season - Brahms's magnificent yet fatalistic Symphony no.4, one of my favorites, a fitting choice here(this work also carries a metaphoric overtone). The overall playing was admirable, charged with energy and drama, with minor quibbles on the conductor's part - he seemed to be not yet at home with shaping thematic development and building up tension. Nevertheless, the tragedy and melancholia inherent in Brahms were all in place. Notable were the climaxes of movements 1 and 4.

Here's where the real delight of the night entered: as the audience were happy clapping, the hall was suddenly hushed down as the conductor picked up his baton and raised his arms, as everyone probably had guessed what would happen next. "Vienna wouldn't be called Vienna without some Strauss," so he declared. Encore! Yes. This time it was Vienna's trademark - music by the Struass family. The quirky Pizzicato Polka made its entrance on plucked strings, and the orchestra, joined by the audience, played the festive Radetzky March that heralded this concert season into a warm conclusion. People revelled in these gems and honoured the conductor and the orchestra with standing ovation which their effort over the year have been more than worthy of.

Next season Evgeny Kissin will be coming to T. to perform the complete cycle of Beethoven concertos!~ I foresee that there will be a soldout for sure. Hopefully I will be able to lay my hands on some tickets.~~ :)
